The Myth of the Massive Leap

I recently got a message on Facebook: “I want to make a quantum leap. Tell me, Barbara, how do I do that?”

My answer: “Take lots of tiny steps.”

If her lack of response was any indication, I don’t think she liked my reply.

But the truth is, that’s precisely how quantum leaps, colossal successes, radical transformations occur…one small step at a time.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better description of this process than a quote by one of my favorite actresses, Julianne Moore.

“You don’t start out thinking, I’m going to be a star!

You think, I hope I get an agent.

Then, I hope I get an audition.

Then, I hope I get a job.

If you think too far ahead, it’s just overwhelming.

It’s better to just keep on going, bit by bit, one foot in front of the other.”

Amen to that! The most dazzling dreams start with the most trivial activities—looking up a phone number, making an appointment, writing an email.

What small step will you make in the direction of your dreams? Leave a comment below.

moving across my province ( HARD ! ) with one cat started with ONE wall of ONE bedroom and “touch things only once” ( my mantra) of chuck, recycle, give to salvation army or pack …. one wall at a time, one room at a time, & one trip to the car at a time ( of a 3rd story apt building with no elevator ) etc etc … then the next thing ya know, like magic ( HARDLY !!!!!!! ) i was moved across the province with great renters renting my apt for the winter ski season …

it was a MASSIVE endeavour, and truuuuullllly only done with one little baby step at a time …. i would never have started had i not had a plan of “one wall at a time” and “touch things only once ” ….

i then had to do the exact same thing in the exact same apt 7 months later to get my apt ready to sell !!!! and the exact same plan was put into motion, which included reno’ing a bathroom ( full gut job ) and painting and cleaning every last surface area …. talk about baby steps for the WIN!!!! ( it sold in 12 days )

i still have a few things on the other side of my province but actively working together with friends ( (where would we be without our beloved friends helping us thru the hard time in life ?????????????? ) to get them to me …

    i would call that a success !!!!! simple, not easy !!!!!! 🙂 🙂 #babystepsforthewin

I feel called to be on public company Board of Directors, and so I am networking. I called women of influence in this city and asked for introductions to current board of director members, and they said YES!! I have a meeting with President of one of the boards I’m interested in. Im having coffee with another board member. One small step at a time. Thanks for the encouragement, Barbara.
