The Secret “The Secret” Forgot to Tell Us

Do you realize it’s been 20 years since The Secret was released. I’m still a big fan of the movie and occasionally watch the video.

Thanks to this wildly popular movie and subsequent book by Rhonda Bryne, the Law of Attraction is part of our vocabulary. And that’s a very good thing…to a point.

The Law of Attraction states that you attract whatever you want into your life through your ability to feel good, think positively, and focus only on the desired outcome. Simply put, if you want to be rich, don’t focus on lack.

But here’s the problem.  How many times have you said you really want wealth, believe riches are on the way, refuse to focus on anything but abundance….and still, nothing happens?   Your bills go unpaid while your bank balance dwindles.

What the Secret failed to mention is that the Law of Attraction is only part of the equation. There is also The Law of Congruency.

This law states that your declared intention must be congruent with your unconscious beliefs.  For example, you may say “I want to be rich,” but if you distrust wealthy people, don’t believe you deserve it, or see money as the root of all evil, then wealth isn’t really what you want.

Or as A Course in Miracles explains: “What you ask for you receive. But this refers to prayers of the heart not the words you use in praying.”

This inner discord explains why affirmations or positive thinking, as powerful as they are, don’t always work.

If you don’t have what you want, chances are your spoken goals are in conflict with your authentic desires, and deep down, you don’t actually believe what you want is possible.

The solution: try asking yourself a question: Why don’t I want it? Or put another way: what’s my pay-off for not having it?

Is there something in your life that you swear you want but it never quite shows up? Tell me about it the comments below.

I’ve always thought generic, daily affirmations like “I am strong, smart, rich and beautiful” were so cringe and woo woo; however, the current one I’ve been doing every day for the past couple of years has been transformative and healing.❤️‍🩹

The idea was given to me by a psychotherapist. It begins, in my optimum life I feel……..One of the parts of the affirmation is that I am in excellent health!

Long story cut short, several years ago my doctor thought I would need to be on medication for the rest of my life, because he thought my condition was genetic, but now he wants to take me off the medication! It must have been lifestyle related. He asked me what changed, but I was too afraid to tell him about the health clause in my affirmation 😂

I don’t think it’s as woo woo as it sounds. Your brain gets rewired for what you ideally want instead of the distraction! I had to also think carefully about habits I would have if I were in excellent health and it usually means starting my day with a glass of water, followed by a workout and having a nice home made breakfast instead of a processed one at Starbucks.

Whenever I feel unsure about something, or need to make a choice, I go back to the affirmation!
