The Myth of the Massive Leap and Overnight Success

I recently got a message on Facebook:I want to make a quantum leap. Tell me, Barbara, how do I do that?”

My answer: “Take lots of tiny steps.”

If her lack of response was any indication, I don’t think she liked my reply.

But the truth is, that’s precisely how quantum leaps, colossal successes, radical transformations occur…one small step at a time.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a better description of this process than a quote by one of my favorite actresses, Julianne Moore.

You don’t start out thinking; I’m going to be a star!

You think, I hope I get an agent.

Then, I hope I get an audition.

Then, I hope I get a job.

If you think too far ahead, it’s just overwhelming.

It’s better to just keep on going, bit by bit, one foot in front of the other.

Amen to that! The most dazzling dreams start with the most trivial activities—looking up a phone number, making an appointment, writing an email.

What small step will you make in the direction of your dreams? Leave me a comment below.

I think a lot of people want that Prince Charming story you talk about, Barbara. They’re in astronomical debt 💸, but can miraculously pay it off in one year and have money left over simply by purchasing a winning lottery ticket or starting a business that takes off overnight! Life doesn’t always work that way.

A small step I’m taking in the direction of my dreams is meeting up with a couple of people next week who might know how to do what I want to do!

Smart move, Lisa. When I was a career counselor, that was one of the first things I had clients do…talk to people who were either doing what they wanted to do. or were familiar with the work or knew someone who was doing it, and pick their brain. I’d love to hear what you learn.

He put me in touch with someone I need to talk to, but on a more interesting note, during the conversation he kept having a fight with his old high school friend about his decision to purchase NVIDIA stock three years ago!

His friend wants him to sell the NVIDIA stock now, because he believes it’s like a Gold Rush stock and the AI bubble is going to burst soon. The more I research, the more I don’t know what side of the story is true! I’ve been inspired to purchase stock based on real life conversations like this in the past and my portfolio is a healthy reflection of this. Would you purchase NVIDIA?

The person he put me in touch with got in touch with me. I felt grateful, but I couldn’t work out why I didn’t feel excited. My friend told me it’s because it’s not what I really want to do. The thing I really want to do is very low budget. We decided that we should reply to the person who got in touch with me first asking if I can start in the New Year when I’m more serious and ready and do the low budget thing to get it out of my system.

That’ s cool the friend got in touch with you. But listen to your gut. If you’re not excited, that’s telling you something. As for Nvida stock, I own some and so far, even knowing we’re likely in an AI bubble that could burst at any time, I haven’t sold my shares. Still feeling it out.

Thanks, Barbara. I am very blessed that person got in touch with me first, however I have made some good choices over the decade(s). I would want to work with me, too.

As for Nvidia, I felt major FOMO, which I know is a feeling that can’t be always trusted. I didn’t know if I was being overly cautious and conservative or progressive. I’m going to make a decision one week later.

Hi Barbara, I appreciate you immensely, and particularly like this article. At my church, we each pick a word for our year in a January White Stone ceremony. This year I picked “step-by-step”. It made me squirm at first, because it didn’t sound very “sacred”, yet it has been SSSSSOOOOOOO perfect for how the year has unfolded. I took my September walk in England, 335,000 steps, very consciously one step at a time, and the transformation in me is both profound and very subtle. Now I’m taking daily small steps to ingrain the changes into my Seattle lifestyle. My love to you, and appreciation for what you’re doing, Mariah Kaye

One of my dreams has been to sell this vacant property my husband and I own and be able to buy our forever home from the proceedings. I used to frame this as “some day, we’ll find the perfect buyer and our dreams will come true” but now I see that selling a property, like selling a film, is FULL of tiny steps. And I have been taking tiny steps for the last 2 weeks and the feeling of progress has been greater than I could possibly imagine. I now feel ready to see this project all the way to the end and enjoy the journey as well!

What a great story, Leigh, about making ‘someday dreams’ come true…just by taking one small step after another. This is a great lesson for life! Best of all, you’re enjoying the journey. Well done!!! I’m so glad you shared this…very inspiring!

How wonderful to hear from you, Mariah. And I LOVE the stone you picked. To me, that’s the secret to success…breaking a goal down into tiny bite-sized pieces, and taking it one small step at a time. Far more enjoyable that way! I can’t believe that walk you went on and how many steps it was…that is quite an accomplishment! Congratulations. Thanks for sharing…I loved what you wrote. Sending big hugs xoxo
