New Year’s Resolutions—How Can You See This Differently?

The ritual begins, for me, right around Christmas. I find myself wondering about the coming year. Indeed, as I write, 2026 looms before me like a blank canvas.   And I ask myself—how do I want to fill it?

Thus begins the Annual Writing of My New Year’s Resolutions.  I suspect many of you may be doing the same.

We do it even though we know that New Year’s Resolutions rarely bear fruit.  Most of us (80%) give up by the second week in February.

So this year, I’m approaching my Resolution Ritual quite differently. I’ve discovered a better way to bring my dreams and goals into reality. I invite you to join me.

Don’t just Resolve…Rewire! Most resolutions focus on changing your behavior…an incredibly arduous task. Rewiring, however, focuses on changing the cause of your behavior—your thought.

Here’s how it works.  List your resolutions (or goals) for 2022. Then ask yourself this question:

What thoughts are coming up regarding this Resolution?

If you notice any negative thoughts that conflict with your desires , immediately replace them with more beneficial ones and continually repeat them.

Instead of “I’m not smart enough,” keep telling yourself “I know I can do this.”

Granted, this can take concerted effort at the outset. But I promise, it works.  You’ll be amazed how quickly and efficiently your behavior will change as your thinking shifts.

What does your New Year’s Resolution ritual look like? Leave me a comment below.

Even though I’ve been making NY resolutions since my teens, I can’t stomach the retro, dated word “resolutions” anymore. It reminds me of bad perms, ritz crackers, box of wine, cringy office parties….I prefer the word “2026 Intentions”! 📔

I have 8 intentions every year – Intellectual, Financial, Career, Home, Travel &Leisure, Reading, Emotional & Spiritual, and Physical. Some of these intentions are becoming more lifestyle than a goal or a resolution. For example, I’m probably always going to work out 15-16 times a month, whether it’s intentional or not now. 🏋️‍♂️

My favorite Emotional intention is “to never miss an opportunity to be fabulous” and “having time to do more for others “. This showed up in an interesting way for me last year. I was approached to make this time wasting, cheesy self introduction video of myself. I didn’t want to do it, but after reading through my intentions, I took the risk to be fabulous and to do more for my agent and it turned into a job on a prime time TV show! 😂

Sometimes I only achieve half of my intention. I’ve discovered achieving half of something is better than nothing. Only achieving half of my weight loss goal significantly reduced my bad cholesterol problem and I could slide into a pair of old jeans again. Sometimes we manifest things in halves or parts! 👖

Also, I like to focus on how these Physical intentions are going to make me feel – agile, strong, healthy, fit, energetic and full of vitality, not just a metric on a scale! 💪

I’ve been told it’s very important to rewire any wish or intention I have positively. For example, I wish to be around people who own their stuff. If I wrote I wish not to be around people who don’t own their stuff, the universe will send me more of the shit that I don’t want, because it can’t differentiate between a negative and positive intention, so I need to flip it to something positive. 💫

For my financial goals, I give myself a minimum amount, an ideal amount and an optimum amount I’d like to invest. This helps me not beat myself up if I don’t achieve what I think I should and enables me to make sure I have something to show for my hard work and to feel my finances expand! 💰

Leisure intentions are not a waste of time. Sometimes I think I’m too busy to do them, but I do it to honor the old me who originally wrote the intention and the current me feels glad I followed through, because I remembered what life is all about! 🤸

I don’t really share my intentions out of fear of being judged as controlled, contrived, anal or rigid, but someone who lost a massive 200 pounds reassured me that nothing good usually comes out of chaos and just going with the flow all the time, you need a little bit of daily or yearly structure and some intentional living. 🤓

I want to get the most out of my short time on earth, so I set intentions and I don’t hate on myself if I only complete 85% of them, because they’re just good intentions, not resolutions set in stone! 🌍

And finally, New Year’s is secretly my favorite holiday, because it’s a time I can positively reset and realign. Christmas is nice, because it celebrates a good year, but it can be a holiday of very mixed emotions, especially if you can’t physically see family for whatever reason, whereas New Year’s is a fresh, new start. Love it! 🥰
